2014 (Renovation); 2018 (Extension)
Completed
The modernization of Terminal 1 includes two separate projects, detailed below.
Terminal 1 Extension (Completed 2021)
The $477.5 million extension of Terminal 1 opened to the public in May 2021. This facility includes the first of seven terminal vertical cores, which will connect the APM system to the terminal via an elevated pedestrian bridge, to open at Los Angeles International Airport's (LAX). The Terminal 1 core will connect travelers to the Center Central Terminal Area (CTA) station in the future and includes elevators and escalators for passenger movement.
The extension also connects Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 post-security screening via a bridge that allows passengers to move between the two buildings without having to be re-screened, providing greater flexibility for passengers.
It also includes two new baggage carousels on the Lower/Arrivals level, additional ticket counters on the Upper/Departures level and a six-lane Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint with Automated Screening Lane (ASL) technology on the Concourse level. The new portion of the ticketing lobby includes self-service check-in kiosks with biometric and touch-free capabilities.
The extension to Terminal 1 was certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certified by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2021.
Among the green building features of the facility:
Terminal 1 Modernization (Completed 2018)

The terminal was 30 years old when work began, and building systems were nearing the end of their useful life. This renovation replaced them with more efficient and environmentally friendly equipment.
